WORKSHOP: Setting is More Than a Backdrop

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:  Have you ever read a book that made you feel as though you were right there experiencing the story? Would you like to trigger a response like that in your readers?

Included in what we generally think of as setting are aspects as diverse as accents, idioms, senses and weather. Period, traditions, moral beliefs, customs and the writer’s voice are all woven into the same tapestry that brings a story to life. Whether it’s your hometown or outer space, every location plays as much a part in adding depth and realism, as do the characters.

An author should have a solid reason for where he or she places characters, and a skillful author can use setting to intensify reader involvement. This course will detail methods to make readers feel as though they are in the moment.

Cheryl will provide instruction on how to bring a setting to life. She’ll explain the pitfalls of backstory and details, and she will share how to create authenticity. Experience has given Cheryl insight on storing and retrieving research. She’ll also give practical advice on:

• engaging emotions and senses
• adding physical realism
• unifying scenes and plot threads
• tightening suspense
• explaining and motivating a character

Prerequisite: Students should have a work in progress and decide prior to class, which project they will work on during the duration of the workshop. If a student is in preliminary plotting stages, he or she will benefit from preparing a solid foundation, developing characters, and knowing time and place before starting the class.


INSTRUCTOR BIO:
Among her achievements, which include over forty published books in both contemporary and historical genres, Cheryl St.John has received multiple Romantic Times Reviewers Choice Awards and three RITA nominations. In describing her stories of second chances and redemption, readers and reviewers use words like, “emotional punch, hometown feel, core values, believable characters and real life situations.” She has taught writing on local and national levels, and is in demand as a motivational speaker.
